Our U15 team won the 2nd Bánás József Memorial Tournament in Budapest with a perfect record. Fogarasi Zoltán’s side won all five of their matches, scored 12 goals, conceded only two, and added two prestigious individual awards to the tournament trophy.
Organised by Dunamenti Iskola, the tournament took place between 5 and 7 June and was hosted by the Ikarus BSE sports complex. According to the competition rules, boys born after 1 January 2011 were eligible to take part, with matches played under full-size pitch regulations.
Our team made it clear from the opening matches that they had arrived in Budapest with serious ambitions: the red and blacks started with a 3–0 win against Mészöly Focisuli, then also defeated Italian side Venezia, this time 2–1. Another confident 3–0 victory followed against Komárom, before FK maintained their perfect record with a 2–0 win over REAC Budapest.
The final match also decided the tournament winner: our team faced hosts Ikarus and won 2–1 thanks to goals from Debrenti and Forró, claiming the trophy unbeaten and with a 100 percent record.
The excellent team performance was crowned with individual honours as well. Bâlbâe Róbert was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament, while the Egri Erbstein Ernő Award – presented to the coach of the winning team – was received by Fogarasi Zoltán.
The Budapest tournament was a memorable weekend for our academy players not only from a sporting perspective: on Friday, the boys also attended the Hungary–Finland match at the Puskás Aréna, which ended in a 2–1 home victory and proved to be a huge experience for them.
According to head coach Fogarasi Zoltán, the high-quality tournament was a fitting conclusion to the team’s season. As he explained, FK Csíkszereda received the invitation back in November from Moskovits Gábor, the technical director of Ikarus BSE, and the club was happy to accept it.
“We knew that we would be taking part in a strong tournament, one that could serve as a fitting end to our team’s season. The competition was organised in a round-robin format with six teams. In our first match, we managed to start with a win against Mészöly Focisuli. Because of the long journey, our game was still a little slow to get going, and we had not fully settled into the rhythm of the tournament yet, but fortunately we cleared the first hurdle” – said the head coach.
The second day brought two serious tests for the red and blacks. First, they faced Italian side Venezia, who, according to Fogarasi Zoltán, gave the impression of a very strong team, as they compete at a high level in Italian youth football.
“We played a very tight match against them. We took the lead, then they equalised, but in the last minute of added time we managed to turn the match in our favour. Everyone knew that this game could even decide the outcome of the tournament, so we approached it accordingly, and fortunately we managed to overcome this challenge as well” – Fogarasi Zoltán evaluated.
After the win against Venezia, FK faced Slovakian side Komárno following a short break, producing a dominant performance and recording another convincing victory. On the final day, the team continued its strong run against REAC Budapest.
“Against REAC, we tried to rotate the squad and rest the players who might still be needed in the final match. Even so, the 2–0 win was a very confident one” – the head coach said.
In the last match of the tournament, our team faced the host club Ikarus, with the stakes clear: a victory would secure the tournament title.
“We knew that, in the event of a defeat, the head-to-head results could even push us down to second place, so our goal was to win this match as well. Thankfully, we managed to do that, and with it we won the tournament too” – Fogarasi Zoltán highlighted.
The coach also expressed his delight that Balbae Róbert was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament, and thanked the academy, the club and the parents for their support.
“I think this was a fitting end to a successful year. I would like to thank the academy and the club for the opportunity to take part, and of course I also thank the parents for their supportive attitude. Without them, we would not have been able to work this effectively. I wish everyone a good rest, and we will continue our work on 6 July” – Fogarasi Zoltán concluded.
