We continued our championship play-off campaign with an important away victory: in Round 7, played in strong winds, we defeated Universitatea Cluj 1–0 and extended our unbeaten run to five consecutive matches.
Strong winds made conditions difficult on Saturday afternoon, so both teams focused on keeping the ball on the ground, with midfield battles and duels playing a key role. We took the initiative from the start, and Nombot, Kis Anita and Geréd Erika tested the home goalkeeper early on.
As the first half progressed, the match became more balanced, but we remained defensively solid, reflected in the fact that Cluj did not record a shot on target until the 42nd minute. The closing stages of the half were largely played in midfield, and the teams went into the break goalless at 0–0.
After the restart we once again dictated the tempo, with most of the play taking place in the home half. We created several promising chances, and in a controversial situation no penalty was awarded after a challenge on Nombot inside the box. We mainly attacked down the left flank, but the Cluj defence managed to clear repeatedly.
As the match approached its final stages, Universitatea increased the tempo and tried to take control. After a through ball, Sigheartău found herself in a shooting position, but Böröcz made a confident save. Just when the game seemed destined to end in a draw, we scored the winner in the first minute of stoppage time: Nombot’s cross from the left, with Porter’s involvement, deflected off Pînzariu into the net (0–1).
With this victory we retained second place in the standings and kept our title hopes alive. The three points also served as a fitting birthday gift for our head coach, Szeitl Szilvia.
After the match, Szeitl Szilvia highlighted the team’s work and determination.
“We work hard week after week, and it seems that this effort is paying off. I don’t believe in luck, only in hard work – and I always tell the girls the same. We are starting to come together as a team and win matches, which is the most important thing right now. Out of six ‘finals’, five remain, and we have to win them. Nothing has been decided yet; we are still in the race and we will fight until the very end. Congratulations to the girls, and thank you to them for making this day beautiful for me as well,” said our head coach.
The play-offs continue on Saturday, May 2 at 13:00, when we face Politehnica Timișoara away from home.
